Getting your old videotapes and 8mm films digitalized is exciting for everyone, even me. It's like stepping into a time machine. Seeing my adult children frolicking around as toddlers or watching myself silently wave to the camera on my first day of school is both nostalgic and emotional. There is no question that getting your old memories digitalized as soon as possible is worth it. Unfortunately, I come across damaged tape and brittle film all too frequently.
The bigger question is what to do with these digital files once they have been created. Here are some things you need to consider.
The bigger question is what to do with these digital files once they have been created. Here are some things you need to consider.
- Files can be burned to DVDs formatted to show on a DVD or Blue Ray player. This is convenient, and in many circumstances, it is the best option.
- There are several downsides to these DVDs. In some cases, the picture isn't as sharp as other formats. Also, consider that when the inevitable arrives, and you need your files converted for the media of the 2020s, using DVD files will not be ideal. And, finally, DVDs do not hold very much. If you have more than a handful of tapes, you're going to have a shelf filled with DVD cases.
- One alternative is to have your files copied to a thumb drive or external hard drive. Depending on the size of the thumb drive, you can store dozens of video files. An external hard drive is even better. It will probably hold more files than any of my customers would have, and you can use it to back up your computer.
- So is there a downside to using one of these drives? The disadvantage is that you can't pop your thumb drive into your DVD player. You'll need a computer to view your videos. Of course, you can always connect your computer to your HD TV and watch it that way.
- Ultimately, everything will be in the cloud, and I'm working toward that goal. I'm just not there yet.
- I can provide the first few DVDs free of charge, but if your order requires more than a half dozen, there will be an additional cost. You are welcome to give me a thumb drive or external hard drive, or I can order one for you. I will charge you about the same as it costs me.
